Goal for the day: To make progress forging a community of writers with a common struggle
We’re starting a week in which we’re going to look at invention from several different angles. First, however, we’re going to rely again on the knowledge that we already have in the room as we review people’s writing process. By looking at how other people do it, you might pick up ideas and find common cause. These diagrams are something I hope you’ll come back to at the end of the semester. They will provide a good point of reflection for you to decide how your writing process has changed as a result of all your work.
The second half of the class we’ll discuss the different versions of Stephen Dunning’s story Wanting to Fly, so if you didn’t read it before, do it before class! I think there are things here we can learn about how initial inspiration threads its way through the revision process.
I’m collecting your poems and paragraphs that you wrote this weekend as a formative assignment.
Assignments due Tuesday
Please read the pages I've posted from Natalie Goldberg’s well-loved book Writing down the Bones that I've posted under Docs.
Bring solid shoes and a rain jacket for Tuesday. We’re going to take a walk.
