Today, the drafts of your stories are due at the beginning of class. I’m going to take these with me and start reading so I can get you feedback by Friday. You’ll then have almost two weeks to practice your revision skills and get them ready for critique.
So far we’ve focused on very traditional stories with a single hero overcoming obstacles to achieve their desire (or not). But there are other kinds of stories out there and it’s important that you are able to recognize these other stories because you might want to tell them. It helps to understand how the general rules of dramatic tension and comedic timing apply.
After going over our Reading Vandalism, I’ll give you a handout and you’ll work in small groups to identify some of these ensemble narratives. We’ll also talk about love stories, which is a genre with specific expectations that writers often struggle to make new and interesting. For this we’ll take a short interlude with Jane Austen…
If there’s time left over today, you’ll be able to work on the next assignments that are due: your Writing Reflections and the Revision of Writing to Truth.
