Goal for the day: To appreciate the role of dialogue in presenting character.
We started the day reading Extra, Extra and noting how the character in the poem is a manifestation of the Aphrodite archetype.
Everyone then took the Harry Potter Character Challenge. Presented with the words J.K. Rowling used to first describe Harry, Dumbledore, and other characters in the series, students had to match these descriptions with quotes from each of the characters.
This prompted a discussion of finding the essential detail that gives the reader a quick read on your character. This can come in description but can also come from creating a distinctive voice with a particular cadence and rhythm.
We also reviewed the three different aspects of character that we’ve been exploring: how to create characters out of thin air, how to create an inner life for your character, and how to present the character on the page.
As an example of using voice and dialogue to present character, we looked at the voice of Celie in the last passage of The Color Purple by Alice Walker.
The last ten minutes everyone spent Powerwriting a monologue, letter, poem in the first-person voice of a character. A revision of this is due on Friday. The character is trying to decide something in this monologue. The assignment should be at least 250 words or one double-spaced page.
Assignment for Tuesday, September 16th
