Learning target: We can identify the essence of our personal writing process
Welcome writers! I’m feeling fantastic about your participation this year in creative writing. For next several months, you get to stretch out your imagination after lunch in this class.
Today, you’ll get the introduction. There are a lot of different types of creative writing classes. I’ve built this one to keep you loose, keep you writing, keep you thinking about writing. The primary goal of this class is for you to own your writing process. We’ll talk today about what that means.
We’ll get you writing and thinking about writing right away with what I call a “powerwrite.” You’ll write for ten minutes, consistently, without stopping, most often in response to a prompt. Today, I want you to start writing by responding to “For me, writing is like…” You won’t have to read what you write. But you will need to talk about what you wrote with the class. You'll also need to share your hopes for the class. It's important for you to identify and for all of us to know what you want to get out of the class.
Then, we’ll start talking magic. Writing is magic. It has the power to take over people’s minds, to make others feel things, to move people to act. Writing is actually very similar to casting the Patronus charm from Harry Potter. Keep this video in mind as we move forward in the class. As a class, I want you to think about yourself as Dumbledore’s Army.
If there’s time, and I think there will be, we’ll do a second powerwrite as a list—you’ll write 50 things that are true about you.
Homework due on Friday
Read the syllabus, note any highlights, questions, concerns and bring in the syllabus sheet signed by a parent or guardian
Bring me a copy of a piece of your creative writing
