Welcome to Creative Writing! Our first day will go by much too quickly but will serve as a solid introduction to the semester. Here’s an outline:
1. Hopes for the class
It’s important that I understand what you hope to get from the class so I can angle my instruction to match your needs.
2. Powerwrite – Metaphors for writing
I’ll introduce “powerwriting” as an activity that we’ll make use of often to get loose and generate material. Today, we’ll be answering the following prompt: Writing for me is like ________________.
3. Process-based writing course
This course is different from most other writing courses in that it values process over product. I’ll explain how this distinction and frame our work for the semester using the following clip from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:

4. Reviewing the syllabus
We’ll spend the final minutes of class going over the syllabus and describing the project for the semester.
Assignment for Friday
1. Review and sign the syllabus
2. Have a parent or guardian review and sign the syllabus
3. Email me a copy of what you feel is your strongest piece of creative writing
4. Read Stephen Dunning's versions of his story "Wanting to Fly" from Janet Burroway's book Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft. This is now posted under Readings & Docs on the drop down menu.
