Goal for the day: To make the connection between sound and sense
I started today passing out several words that sound like what they mean. This is onomatopoeia and we spent time here to try to hard wire the connection between sound and sense for our poetry. Many of these words evolved from an imitation of a sound and over time came to signify that thing.
Is there a word in your poems that is working this way.
We then divided up nonsense words representing fantasy creatures from the poem "Adam's Task" by John Hollander. Everyone drew what they thought the animal looked like based solely on the sound of the name. We all admired these fantastic creations.
Folks then continued working on their poems.
Homework for Friday, October 10th
Keep working on poems and turn in unfinished work
