Goal for the day: To have students discover a character they can continue to develop
There is a lot written about how to describe characters and integrate them into stories. There isn't much about how to discover or find characters. For this, we're going to turn to the world of theater We'll discover characters through movement that you will continue to develop over the next week.
You can discover characters by borrowing elements of people you meet in the course of your life. You can create characters to create situations that you invent. You can invent characters to fit into places that you want to write about. You can think up a character to fit a theme or idea that you want to explore. Ultimately though, all your characters are part of you. This is important. Even if you don't like all your characters, you have to have empathy and allegiance to them. Even our evil characters believe in what they're doing, believe that they're doing the only thing they can.
Assignment for Thursday
None. But make sure to read The Lesson for Friday.
