Goal for the day: To find inspiration in the every day world
Today is about looking under the surface of everyday things. You will be searching for the stuff of metaphors at AHS: down the hallways, in the bathrooms, around the parking lot of our fine school. Overused metaphors become cliches, the magic has worn out of them. It's our job as writers to renew the world's store of metaphorical magic by seeing connections between vastly different objects, characters, and phenomena. So, we know turning on a light can suggest getting an idea. But what else can it suggest? Get original. Get inspired.
Inspiration can come from conversation as well. You will go into the classrooms and common spaces and listen for bits of conversation that offer a doorway into a story or poem. Take a seemingly innocent phrase and think about how it could turn into something ominous. Or take an offhand comment and make it the last line of a 400-page novel that explains everything. Again, think about how to pull magic from contrast, from difference. This is how you can make the world new again.
