Learning targets:
· We can differentiate the market from the polis
· We can identify criteria for a good issue to tackle for our project
· We can describe a picture of what's happening for young people in La Plata County
Welcome to your first full week of humanities! We're working on all three of our project pieces again today, so hold on.
You'll start with your first entry into your digital storytelling journal that you created and shared with me on Friday. Open that document and take a crack at answering the essential question you'll have to address in your digital story. "How will you help make America a more perfect union?" Think about your future career, family life, the place you want to live, and things that are happening in our country right now that are important you. Where is your passion? Even if it doesn't seem political, at all, there is a political component to it. Build that bridge between your passion and our national interest.
Once you're done with that starter, I'll go over the week. After today we'll spend most of the rest of the week working on your college essay and talking about writing. We'll be doing a peer critique of your essay on Friday. After today, you'll also work in groups or caucuses to research issues for our group project that seem interesting to you.
After the explanation of the week, we'll switch into Four Corners on our reading, The Market and the Polis by Deborah Stone. There is a lot in this reading and I think we'll have plenty to talk about. Pay attention for moments that pop. This discussion could go into your digital story. There could also be ideas that you use in your paper. I'm hoping we'll have some time for you to post some of your reactions to the reading and discussion on your DP. Here's a copy of the Four Corners Statements.
Right before break, Ellen is going to come in and talk about the new Peer Mentor Program that you can participate in.
After break, we're going to start throwing ideas for our group project up on the board. You'll give what you think are the three most important issues affecting young people in La Plata County. These issues could be completely local, be part of a national debate, or be global in scope.
We'll talk about what criteria we should use to sort through these ideas and choose one to focus on. We need criteria before even trying to make a decision.
Then I'm going to give you a short mini-lecture on the La Plata County Children, Youth, and Family Master Plan (CYFMP). This is last time we really came together as a community to do something for young people in our area. It's important for you to get the background. Then, I'll pass out some of the stats from the Development Assets survey completed as part of the Master Plan (see resources page). We have data from 2008 and 2014. And we have data from Animas High. We'll divide into groups of two or three people to breakdown the data and pull out notable trends. I'll type all this up on this Google doc. You'll use this emerging picture of youth in La Plata County to answer your homework.
Finally, I'll pass out a list of potential issues or topics for our group project. This list is not complete. I giving it to you to help you think about what you'd like to do for the group project.
Homework due Tuesday, September 1
Look at the data from your assigned section for the Development Assets Survey. Look at your section for 2008, 2014, and Animas High School. What do you notice? What has changed? Write a summary paragraph in this Google document to help us put together a picture of what's happening with youth in our region.
