We’ll start today by going over briefly the handout that Matt has put together to walk you through the talk prep/outline making process. This is a linear style to organization and provides a good baseline.
But we know from watching Sarah Kay and Sir Ken that linear isn’t the only way to go. Sarah focused more on giving audience members an “emotional journey” to use Riley’s words, an experience of what she wanted to get across. Sir Ken filled his outline with stories and jokes to build rapport with his audience interspersed with effective use of repetition and making essentially the same point from different angles. He also used a loose outline of his main points to keep people on track.
You will find your own way to unspool your consciousness in front of friends and family. We’ll look at some of last year’s students figuring out how to organize their thoughts and convey them in a compelling way. This is what you’ll start today or tomorrow. These short snippets are posted on my DP under Presentation Resources.
Finally, you’ll use this document from Matt to learn a bit about presentations from Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
Homework due Friday, May 1st
Have the main points you want to convey organized for tomorrow’s work session.
If you haven’t yet, finish and turn in your paper.
