Goal for the day: To identify the important questions coming out of the literature
This morning we’re going to work on one of the key skills we’re hoping you leave senior project with. I’m calling this skill “Reading for Questions,” and it’s the key to part III (and really part IV as well). To introduce this, I’ll tell you the story of the bison on the Great Plains and how it relates to my master’s thesis.
Then you’ll divide up into pairs and use this handout to help each other identify the key questions, issues, and debates emerging from the literature. Ideally, this is how you organize Part III of your paper. This will give you some meat to comment on and discuss in Part IV. This is what the Deep Reading assignment is about.
After we get through this exercise, I think you’ll have a good sense of the gaps in your analysis and how to close them. This will save you massive amounts of time in revision.
The rest of the time you should spend moving forward on writing and outlining. Remember, you are shooting to have a draft done by Friday.
Homework due Thursday, April 16th
Spend at least 45 minutes writing your paper
