Goal for the day: To appreciate the way different values pull against one another within the structure of the constitution
1. We’re going to look to Los Angeles to see how a situation in Ferguson might improve and how the federal government can play a constructive role.
We'll hear from actress and playwright Anna Deveare Smith whose play "Twilight. Los Angeles, 1992" explored the different viewpoints after the 1992 riots in the City of the Angels. We'll also see what has happened since.
2. Next we’re going to take a quick detour into our system of checks and balances so you have a clear sense of how our three branches of government interact on issues of the day. The starter for this will be an epic rock-paper-scissors death-match tournament, which we might just have to take outside.
3. After this we’ll run through some specific situations from the last 50 years to better understand how this has played out in practice. The fate of the laws we’ll discuss is still unresolved.
4. We’ll end the day looking at and scoring previous FAMP videos and discussing how the first amendment relates or doesn't relate to the issue you've chosen as the most influential of the next hundred years.
Assignment for Wednesday, the 28th
Read: Article about shooting in Los Angeles
Read: Article about Captain Johnson
Google Doc: What values are present in the response of the LAPD and Captain Johnson to civil discord and unrest? Give evidence from the text of the two articles.
