We will finish the video about the march from Selma to Montgomery to start off this morning. We’ll then spend a few minutes looking at the current headlines and how, fifty years later, voting rights is now an important issue because of a Supreme Court decision in 2013 that invalidated one key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. You can find the Colorado’s voting registration rules here. Colorado has some of the most inclusive voting laws in the country. But this can always change depending on the legislators and the people who elect them.
We’ll take an early break and then hear from the organizers of the Voices of the Animas event who will share with us their ideas about what they could add to our event.
After this, we’ll divide up group project assignments. Your homework is to bring in a description of what beautiful work looks like for your specific assignments. We’ll use this to create an assessment tool to give you a grade for the group piece of the project. This will count in the community learning portion of your grade.
I believe we should have time at the end of class to do some housekeeping. Tomorrow, Wednesday, you’ll have half a class to write an in-class reflective essay giving a preliminary answer to our essential question, “How do you see yourself contributing to making America a more perfect union?” To facilitate this process, I want you to cut and paste (and type) the following into your DS Journal.
- Answers to the homework questions from the last week that I asked you to put into the Conference Prep document
- Your answer at the bottom of the “What kind of change maker are you” worksheet
- Your answer to the final question of your Constitutional Values Writing Packet – I will pass a copy your answer back to you
- Your DP post on why you chose your place on the political values graph
- Your initial DP posts on your political philosophy and role model that you chose at the beginning course.
For the essay tomorrow, I will ask you to include the two things we’ve studied that have had the greatest influence on your current answer to this question. If there is time, you can start typing up some of these notes into your journal as well.
Homework due Wednesday, October 21st
