Learning target: We can describe the balance of values underlying the Constitution
We're going to start today with the video of President Obama's press conference after the shooting last week. I decided that this is too powerful a piece of rhetoric for us to ignore given the themes of our project. We'll then show some of the responses of the Republican candidates. What are the values in conflict in the debate about how to address gun violence.
From here we're going to take stock of the values underlying our constitution. You'll open up this Constitutional Values Scoresheet. You've each been assigned a section of our Constitution in Plain English. Open this document up as well. Read your section. You have ten points to distribute across the five values you read about yesterday. We're going to tally up which values have the greatest presence in our Constitution.
In the process, we'll talk about Articles IV, V, VI, and VII.
Then you'll do the same thing for the amendments. I've given you one or two of the amendments to score. We'll then spend the rest of the time before break going over each amendment together. I've given three people the First Amendment because it is so fundamental to our government. It will be curious to see if people's distribution of points is the same.
After break, you have to take a Health Lifestyles Survey. Everyone in the school is taking it and it was either have seniors take it in Humanities or mandate attendance in Advisory. This will last the rest of the period. If you finish early you can work on your writing packet.
