Goal for the day: To start our speeches
Our executive committee of honors students met on Thursday afternoon and chose one climate change bill and one immigration reform bill to present to run through our Model Senate. We spent most of the session reading and annotating these bills and getting ideas for our speeches. We will continue with this on Monday.
We started today with a half hour presentation and Q&A with Danny Quinlan, the director of Companeros, who spoke about the immigrants that he works with on a daily basis. Unfortunately we couldn't spend more than a half hour with Danny. But hopefully it will give you ideas for amendments for the immigration reform bill.
After Danny's presentation, I passed out the assignment for annotating the bills and writing your speech. We worked on this for the rest of class. I discussed deadlines with Matt and changed the due date for the graded speeches from Tuesday morning to Thursday morning. This is reflected in the new posted assignment.
Homework for Monday, December 8th
Work on your speech. Try to have an outline by the beginning of class on Monday. If you are on the Environment and Public Works committee studying the climate bill and write a speech about whether you support or oppose the bill and how you'd like it changed. If you are on the Judiciary Committee, look at the immigration bill and work on a speech about immigration reform.
