Goal for the day: To finish a draft of your speech
Welcome to Model Senate week!
We're starting this morning with another Parly Pro practice led by Senator Barbara Boxer, our Environment and Public Works Committee Chair. Today's practice will give us a chance to discuss recent events in Ferguson and New York City. We're returning to the issues we discussed the first day of class and will likely return again to this situation before the end of the year. Here is the checklist of questions you need to work through.
After this you'll work on two things....
1) You'll continue working on your speech, which is due to me Thursday morning.
2) You'll draft and send an email to your parents inviting them to Model Senate. Here's the info...
Finally, we want you to write an email to your parents inviting them to Model Senate. Here's the plan...
Open up a word document and type an invitation to your parents (then paste it into an email – really, you should do this). It should contain the following things:
A nice greeting. I know you're probably never nice to your parents, so this might be hard for you. Say “hi” or something nice.
Tell them you would like to invite them to our Model Senate Exhibition.
Tell them the time and place of the exhibition (Durango Public Library, 1-4, Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College, 5-8:30)
Explain to them what model senate is. (See my sample letter below – you may cut and use portions of this text if you like).
Explain your role in Model Senate
Say one really cool thing you're excited about.
Say goodbye. Again, be nice!
Here's a sample:
Dearest beloved and exalted parents,
We have our Humanities Model Senate exhibition coming up next week, and I would love it if you came and checked out what we've been doing lately. It is next Thursday, December 11th. We'll start off in the Durango Library from 1 to 4, then move up to Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College from 5 to 8:15 or so.
Model Senate is the capstone project for our entire semester 1 study on American government and politics. I am acting as Senator _____, a Republican from ________. We have crafted legislation as our senators on climate change and immigration reform, and on Thursday evening we will try to pass these bills as if we were the United States Senate. I am on the _____ committee, and will be dealing with ___(issue)___.
I'm super excited that I get to play Senator Herman Cain and work on the immigration bill. I'm also a little nervous that I might not be capable of grasping his nuanced immigration policy, and articulating it with such fortitude. Hope to see you there!
With undying eternal love,
Snookums.
Done? Email it away!!!
Homework for Tuesday, December 9th
Refine your speech. Tomorrow you need to come for rehearsal during first and second period. Third period tomorrow will be work time.
