Goal for the day:
· To write a letter to your senior project advisor
· To understand and take a position on the concept of land-use planning
Our focuser today will be a clip from 1979 with Milton Freidman talking about greed. Some of you will probably hear echoes from the movie Wall Street in his response. This happened right before President Reagan was elected and took Friedman’s idea as his guide for economic policy.
The first half of class we'll focus on senior project. Matt and I worked hard to assign each person a senior project advisor that will be able to support their interests and help them create a strong project. We were not able to accommodate everyone's top three choices, but we do feel we were able to create a strong match for each person. I will be available throughout the process to review drafts and provide feedback over the next three months, so your advisor will not be your only source of assistance as you work on your project.
Your first task today is to enter your name in a Google doc that Matt is creating and then write a letter to your advisor asking to meet at some point during the next two weeks. Use Matt's SPAM -1 document to put this email together. Note the dates are off on the first page of this document. They should read Tuesday, February 17th and Thursday, February 26th. Guidelines for the letter are on the back of the document.
Once you finish your letter, you should spend the time before break searching for three good sources for your project. We might watch this video that Matt put together on reading academic sources. If we don't do this today, we'll watch it on Tuesday. If you have sources, start reading. You should have read 3 to 5 over the next three weeks.
After break, I’ll show you a clip from Herman Daly talking about his perspective on the economy. Then we'll start to conclude our study of economic policy by looking at land-use planning and policy, which can seem technical and mundane but, in practice, is anything but, especially in La Plata County. You'll do an exercise to give you a sense of what planning is and why it exists.
Then we'll read and discuss this article from High Country News that talks about arguably the most contentious (an important) local policy debate over the past decade. If there's any time left, we'll review Option 3, the policy proposal as I'll ask you on Tuesday what project option you want to move forward with.
Homework due Tuesday February 17th
Finish Outline # 3 assignment
Review the Economic Policy Proposal Overview and bring in any questions, concerns, or needed clarifications
