Goal for the day: Have everyone find a project they are excited about
Good Tuesday morning to you! It’s project time. Most of class will be unstructured for the next three weeks, especially this week as you create a task list and deadlines for yourself.
Next week there will be optional classes that you can choose to participate in. These classes will either be directly related to your project OR come from a short list of topics that we’ll develop together. These will be topics that you want more to learn more about or that we missed over the last several weeks.
1. Economic Beliefs Chart - Your starter today is to complete the Economic Affiliations chart and explanation. I understand there were some technical difficulties with the spreadsheet. If you double-click you should be able to type in your explanation. We’ll figure this out and get everyone squared away.
BTW – I’ve updated all the grades, so it will be worthwhile to see where you are at as we head into the last three weeks of True Wealth
2. Review Policy Proposal Option - I want to go over the Policy Proposal Overview that I passed out on Friday. I want to make sure that everyone understands what this option entails. I’ve created an outline that people choosing this option can use to fill in.
3. Group Time
Now you’ll break down into work groups depending on what proposal option you choose. You’ll be working on and off for the next three weeks in this group. Today, I want you to review the “How Do I Do This?” document for your option. This will give you more specific instructions on how to complete the project.
Business Proposal
Economic Development Proposal
Economic Policy Proposal
Once you finish reading this, go through these discussion questions as a group. I will be floating during this period. I want to see what you think will be helpful. Particular needs will turn into group sessions next week. I can also answer questions and clarify parts of the assignment.
The next step is to fill in the calendar on the back of the discussion questions. Look at the sample weekly checklist I’ve provided. Give yourself some deadlines. Plan out your time. This project has a lot of moving pieces that you need to keep organized.
You’ll likely need to make contacts out in the community. “They never got back to me,” is not an excuse. You have to contact people early enough so that there’s time for them to respond to your email or you have time to find someone else. This is similar to being a journalist. You have a deadline and you have to get a story. It won’t wait for someone to return your call.
If you know what kind of proposal you want to write, but you don’t know the topic or issue, this is also the time to complete Part II of the Where’s My Project? Handout. Grab me to talk after filling out these questions. I might have some ideas for you.
I anticipate there will be a small group in our class that really doesn't know where to start. The “Where’s My Project” handout is for you. Fill this out. Share your initial ideas. I’ll provide some options. You can’t wait for the perfect idea to strike you. Pick your best option, start working on it, and know that you might decide to change your idea over the next few days.
Homework due on Wednesday, February 18th
Turn in any outstanding assignments. They’ll be late but you can still get some credit.
Make sure to contact your senior project advisor to set up a meeting (cc: me on your letter!)
Read the appropriate "How Do I Do This?" document and answer the discussion questions...
