Goal for the day: Understand how financial laws and regulations impact businesses
We’ll start today with the true story of Monopoly the board game.
This is because I’ll be doing an elective class on stock markets this morning for the first half of class. Appropriate for this section, we’ll be playing a game, gambling if you will, with sugar. From a business perspective, the stock market is for high rollers. What about stock markets for small business? How does the stock market relate to our local economy? For this, we’ll talk about recent innovations in small business financing, such as direct public offerings (DPOs) and local stock markets.
After break, I’ll open up a two part session on cooperatives vs. corporations and on green/socially responsible business. Corporations are about managing risk; cooperatives are about achieving a mission. We’ll set the two of these against each other in a cage death match. I’ll show some video clips on both (these will be posted under Student Resources) and talk about the Mondragon Cooperative in Spain and this new fledgling zero-waste coop in Boston.
Then, we’ll talk about socially-responsible certifications. What is reliable and trustworthy? What is just “greenwashing”? What do you look for when you’re choosing products and services? I’ll show you this article about a controversy over forest product certification and then I’ll go into more depth about an effort to create a certification system for Durango.
Homework due Thursday, February 26th
Keep working on your project!!
