Goal for the day: For you to start thinking about marketing, hiring, organizational management for your organization
We started the day looking at some of the advertisements that you brought in. Today you're going to coach each other as you consider marketing, hiring staff, and the type of business structure that's most appropriate for your idea. We'll use this handout to move through small group.
You'll break down into groups of three and take turns thinking about these topics. The first person will talk about marketing for their product. The other two people will then offer feedback and ideas to consider. The second person will talk through the hiring of staff for their product and then get feedback, ideas, and coaching. The third person will review this sheet listing the types of businesses, choose the three most appropriate business structures, and then get feedback from the other two people in the group.
In between these rounds, I'll show two different videos. The first is a TED lecture by Stephen Levitt on the similarities between a drug gang and McDonalds.
The second is a news segment on Benefit Corporations, a new legal entity that allows corporate boards to consider social and environmental impacts in their decision-making.
I also talked about what you should be thinking about when putting together your outline assignments. The outlines that were turned in fell down in the reasoning and the evidence. The reasons for your argument need to support your thesis; they need to do more than be vaguely related to the topic. Your evidence needs to be specific; general assertions and simple logic is too easy to argue against. Find a specific example from your own life. Better, use the examples that we discuss in class (this is why notes can be useful). Or pull in something from other classes or outside readings. Evidence along the lines of "Humans are like this...." don't serve you well.
The purpose of these assignments is for you to become more skilled at building compelling arguments. I'd rather have you stumble on this small assignment, than stumble later on, especially on your senior project.
I passed out the second outline assignment that's due on Monday.
I offered a deal to those of you who turned in the assignment to improve your grade and am open to figuring out a way for those who didn't to make it up but only until next week.
Homework due on January 30th
Read the overview to the business proposal and come with any questions, concerns, or needs.
