Goal for the day: To consider the range of young adults trying to live in Durango
Yesterday you did a lot of individual work. Today you’ll work in small groups.
1. But to get us started, I wanted to point out this article about the film “Selma” that’s out right now and deals with the voting rights struggle that we studied last semester. While the film is earning high praise, many of said the portrayal of President Johnson as a reluctant civil rights crusader is inaccurate. This article is further evidence that, for all his faults, LBJ did value equality.
2. We’ll finish up our work from yesterday creating a profile of the economy in La Plata County and comparing it the U.S. economy as a whole. This table contains a good comparison.
3. You’ll then divide up into groups and create an economic “avatar.” Your views on economics often depends on your role or position within the economy. We’ll look at several roles during the project: business owner, developer, elected official. But we’ll start with workers and consumers. Our avatars will provide a useful tool to help us study both employment and consumption and get you to reflect on how these topics play out in Durango. We’ll try to introduce our avatars to the rest of the class before break.
4. After break, you’ll create a work history and resume for your avatar. Because it just so happens they are in need of a job. Homework for Thursday is to bring in potential jobs in Durango that your avatar would like to apply to.
Homework due Thursday, January 8th
Find an advertisement for a job in the area that your avatar could apply to. Each group needs four potential jobs for Thursday.
