Goals for the day:
We have a shortened class today because the panel of AHS alumni will be here to answer your burning questions about life after graduation. We'll head to Matt's room at 11:30 to get this party started....
1. The starter for today is an anecdote that might give you ideas for stimulating manufacturing in Durango. This article explains a bit more about the story I'll tell you.
2. The first task today is bang out a solid resume for your avatar in small groups. While I'm glad that this exercise proved entertaining yesterday, there are serious questions at work behind this activity. For you to get the most out of the next couple of weeks, you're going to have to bracket your humor and consider the real and relevant economic issues and problems around living and working in La Plata County.
3. We'll end by looking at several different definitions of "economics" as a field of study, which you will cluster around different themes.
Homework due Thursday, January 8th
Use the web links under Student Resources to find a job opening that fits your avatars skill set and experience
Read the two-page handout "Ways to Think about Economics" and define in your journal what "economics" means to you. You must give a rationale and justification for your definition.
Read “An Explanatory Note” from Freakonomics
- Create a solid work history and resume for your avatar
- Engage you in questions about what economics is all about
