Goal for the day:
· Refine your three paragraphs for the Deep Reading assignment
· Actively read a third source for your senior project
Good morning and happy Friday. Today, we’ll watch the next few minutes of President Obama’s speech. From roughly 22:35 minutes to 29:00 minute mark. During this section of the speech he is trying to get people behind his definition of America as an inclusive and dynamic society. Notice how he raises an opposing viewpoint of America and then dismisses it with countless examples. This strengthens his argument. The key phrase I think is “America is no fragile thing.” This is good oratory in that it identifies the audience with American heroes and then relates it all back to the place, to the Selma March. His message here is you can be a hero to if you take the time to vote.
I will pass back Outline #4. These, on the whole, were not as good as Outline #3. One general piece of feedback is to avoid using concessives in a mechanical way. Unless you are prepared to fully address the opposing viewpoint, keep it out of the thesis statement. It will just muddy the waters and can lead you and your reader astray.
There is a way to improve your economics grade. I have been working to organize this event on the artisan economy in conjunction with the Green Business Roundtable. If you attend this event and check in with me, you can replace your lowest outline score with 20 points. The event should be dynamic and speaks directly to our central question about how to create a strong, resilient local economy. As we get closer to April 8th, I’ll speak more about this event.
Homework due Monday, March 16th
Keep working on your exhibition visual!! Exhibition is March 17th @ 5:00 p.m. at the Rec Center
Finish your Deep Reading Packet
Keep actively reading articles for your senior project
