Goal for the day: To understand the evolution of climate change as an issue
We’re picking up today where we left off. I’ll give you a few minutes to gather your thoughts on yesterday’s video using the questions in your climate notebook. What were the takeaways? Would you vote for Michael Grimm? We’ll talk about what you learned about politicians and what motivates them from yesterday’s video.
We’ll then take advantage of the homework you did last night looking at timelines of climate change. Together we’ll compile our own timeline of the important events, policies, and turning points of the last forty years of effort on this issue. I’ll pitch in with this powerpoint that goes over what I think are the essential events to be an informed lawmaker in our Model Senate. Just this morning, we could add a new item on the timeline as the U.S. and China announced an agreement on new climate targets. The hope is that this will jump start talks in Paris in 2015 for a comprehensive global climate treaty.
After break, we’ll watch Episode 6 of Years of Living Dangerously called Winds of Change. This hour-long video will discuss the climate change denial industry, renewable energy standards, fracking and methane. This video features Colorado in several section, along with Kansas and Utah.
Homework due on Thursday, November 13th
Fill in the sheet on Episode 6 of Years of Living Dangerously in your notebook. I will be collecting your packets for a quick check tomorrow at the end of class. This will be worth five formative points. Tomorrow I’ll pass out a new packet for Thursday and Friday.
