Learning target: We can describe the causes of pollution on the Lower Animas, different sides to the issue, and potential solutions
Welcome back from the weekend. And welcome to Aaron Kimple, from the Mountain Studies Institute, who will share with us his work looking at pollution on the lower Animas River. This is the pollution from farms and ranches and settlement all the way down into New Mexico. We've talked about this, but haven't gotten a lot of details. Aaron is THE expert and so use our scientific perspectives worksheet to find questions if you can't think of one on your own.
We'll take a break once we're done asking questions and "mined" Aaron for all his information.
After break, we'll debrief what we learned from his visit and get these facts on the walls. Today we're pooling information from Aaron and information from the Story Corps interviews as we move toward our goal for the week: creating a mission for our project.
On Friday, it sounded as though we needed more clarification on what is actually happening right now around the spill. I'm going to take you to this article in Thursday's Durango Herald on a committee hearing in Washington hosted by our two senators, Cory Gardner and Michael Bennett. We'll listen to a little bit of their opening remarks and contrast this with the politics of gun control, which we touch on Friday. Building off your work on Friday, I'll show you this document and we'll talk about what the likely outcome of the different pieces of legislation are currently before Congress. This should give us a good solid "present" story to go along with our past.
After this, it's your turn. Look at the notes from the Story Corps interview I assigned you. Write anything new or surprising down on a note card and tape it under our Past, Present, and Future signs. I will compile all this information so we have it tomorrow when we start crafting our mission. That should take us to time.
Homework due Tuesday, October 6th
Do a freewrite about your vision for the Animas River in twenty years. Include the following:
Circle or underline the sentence in your vision that encapsulates your main point or thesis.
Tomorrow we will be using this as part of our starter.
