Learning target:
· We gain more self-awareness of our own writing process and needs (esp. with regard to conferences)
· We understand options for structuring the college essay
The first half hour today we’re going to finish what we started yesterday—gaining a picture of youth in La Plata County and using this to think about what issues we should focus on for our group project. You group should have entered a paragraph in this Google Doc. I’ll also pass out this list of sample issues. Then I’ll ask you to post on your DP one issue or issue area you find compelling and explain why. This is where we’ll stop today, but I’ll explain the next steps that we’ll use to cluster around a narrower set of issues.
We’ll then switch gears and turn our attention to our college essay writing. Before break you’ll do some assessment of what kind of writer you. First you’ll take this writing personality survey. Next, I’ll explain the different genres of writing and the three levels in writing that all good writing teachers pay attention to. Finally, we’ll talk writing conferences and you’ll start and share with me a Google doc where you’ll type your thoughts prior to our writing conferences.
You’ll get started on this now. Write some thoughts in this Google Doc. Given your writing personality, given the types of writing and levels in writing, given what you said you wanted to work on this semester—write some goals for the year in terms of your writing. This might be the same as your writing success assignment. But new things might have come up, especially about the writing process. I’ll review this before our first conference next week.
After break, I’ll pass out and review the formal College Essay assignment. We’ll discuss what prompts you should be responding to.
Then you’ll break into small groups and become an admissions committee. I’ll give you a rubric and you’ll rank candidates by their essays. We’ll use these essays to discuss options for structuring a college essay.
Finally, I’ll pass out my tip sheet for college essays. And a list of invention and outlining strategies you can use to take the next step in getting a draft together. You’ll either focus on invention or outlining for your homework. We’ll talk about this tomorrow.
Homework due Wednesday, September 2nd
Choose a prompt from the list on the assignment or from the application of one of the schools you are interested in
Come prepared to talk about what invention or outlining strategy you used last night that was helpful advancing your essay. This means you have to spend at least a bit of time getting started.
