Learning target:
· We can identify at least two different ways to start writing
· We can name elements of a strong college essay
Today we have a short class because of PEAK meeting. I've checked out all your DPs in order to collect the issues that you're interested in for the group project and give you some things to think about as we move forward. I'll pass out this feedback at the start of class.
We'll start with the existing short list of issues you've come up with as a class. You'll join a discussion about at least one of these issues. As a group, you need to articulate an initial argument for building the class project around this set of issues. You can drift from issue to issue and listen in if you just want to get a sense of what the issues are all about. This will be free form and last about twenty minutes. The next step will be to choose one of these groups to join to do some initial research. We'll be looking to decide about our issue by the end of next week.
I'll next show this digital story on Sofas to transition us from our group project to college essays.
Before you start in-class work time, I want to do two things. First, I want to hear what invention or outlining strategy you used to get started last night on your essay. Did you freewrite? Did you make a list? Did you create a cluster diagram? I want you to hear the diversity in how each of your approach the writing task. I also want your Writing Personality Profile. Turn those in. This will help with our conferences.
Second, I want us to decide what the criteria are for a good college essay. You'll write one or two things that you think make a good college essay on the board. I'll then share my criteria and we'll compare. We'll narrow the list of criteria and you'll decide how you want to divide 100% percent on the evaluation of this essay. This, and making progress on your essay, is your homework.
The rest of the class will be in-class work time. I'll check in with you as needed.
Homework due Thursday, September 3rd
Work on your college essay and decide how you want to divide up 100 percent among the criteria we choose for the essay.
Here is the list of criteria that we decided upon (PDF or MS Word). Divide 100 points using these categories. Organization has to have a minimum of 20 points (you can give it more) and mechanics has to have a minimum of 15 points. You can give some of the categories zero.
