Goal for the day: For students to consider the effectiveness of rights as a political strategy
If you want to change something in society, you need to have a strategy. One option is to claim that a group of people, or in the case of the natural world, has a “right” to something. To understand the Bill of Rights, it’s important to understand what “rights” actually are and what they can do in the political sphere.
We’re going to use our seminar to explore whether “rights” is an effective way to define relationships within our society We’ll explore this bigger question with a more specific one, “Should people and organizations claim “rights of nature” to further environmental protection.
Hopefully, you’ll leave the class with an understanding of what rights contribute to our political dialogue and some ideas about whether and how we should expand rights within our government.
Assignment for Friday
None. We'll be studying street law tomorrow.
