Goal for the day: For students to apply their knowledge of the government to two distinct constitutional processs: the passage of amendments and the confirmation of a Supreme Court judge.
Today we’re going to see how all the high-minded ideas about checks and balances in the Constitution meets the political realities in a partisan political environment.
But first up, we’ll sweep up the street law incidents you threw on the board on Friday. I found answers to most of the questions you raised and discovered a new law enforcement trend that you need to be aware of.
After a bit of housekeeping, we’ll dive into the amendment process experientially by looking at the amendments that have failed to pass (yet). You’ll adopt one of these orphaned amendments (or come up with your own) to advocate for with the class. We’ll then see if your amendment can pass the class, a prelude perhaps to formal adoption by the country.
After an early break, we’ll review the process for confirming a Supreme Court justice. You’ll need to understand this because we’ll be holding a confirmation hearing, most likely on Tuesday, with the historical/famous individuals that you will research and role play.
With a foundation of knowledge behind us, the focus is now turning toward application and experience of how our Constitution actually works (or doesn’t).
Assignment for Tuesday, September 9th
Start studying for the test on Friday – you’ll get the study guide in class
Prepare for the confirmation hearing on Tuesday
