Goal for the day: For students to understand the intersection of politics and the constitution
We’ll start out today voting for President. This will kick off our Supreme Court confirmation process. We’ll all need to work independently and together to decide on the future of the court. During the scenario you are to take on the values, opinions, and attitudes of your character. The more you know about your character, the more accurately you will be able to represent their views.
Our president will come up with a short list, interview candidates, and choose his nominee while the rest of our characters continue getting oriented about their positions.
Once our nominee is chosen we’ll review what confirmation hearing are like and some notable examples of the past thirty years. This will inform our hearing and give a picture of how politics enters into this constitutional process.
Supporters and opponents of the nominee will then caucus to prepare for the hearing. I’ll provide some worksheets to sharpen questions for the television cameras.
As you leave for the break, you will choose a chairman for the hearing. When we come back this individual will manage the hearing and fairly allocate time and declare certain questions irrelevant to choosing a justice. At the end of the hearing, the Senators will vote whether to recommend the nominee to the full Senate for approval.
Assignment for Tuesday, September 9th
Keep studying for the test. Wednesday is our review session. Come with questions after looking at the study guide. Also refer to the documents posted on our Resources page to help you study for the test.
