Welcome back! We have ten days before our Model Senate convenes and lots to do in the interim. There are bills and speech to write, props to gather, positions to research. I’ll start with a quick review of how we’re going to spend the next two weeks.
And then we’ll get you up and moving with some Four Corners action to refresh ourselves on climate change and immigration reform and demonstrate the excellent research you’ve done on your senator. Remember your Senate Sports Cards should be done today and ready to laminate!
We’ll talk a little bit about compromise and you’ll get a sense of where your own senator is on how likely your senator is to cut a deal.
Then we’ll go over how this whole shebang is actually going to work. I’ve put together a short summary that I’ll share but only after you’ve refreshed your memory on how a Senate bill makes its way from an idea to the President’s desk. Chocolate is at stake, so it might pay to brush up.
After break, you’ll have some time brainstorm ideas for bills with this worksheet, get a reaction from a fellow senator, and search for co-authors. I’ll pass out the formal bill writing assignment that we’ll go over. Draft bills are due this Wednesday at the end of class and so there’s no time to lose.
Homework due on Tuesday, December 2nd
Map out the substance of your bill with your co-author. You’ll get a template tomorrow you can use to turn your ideas into bills.
